Monterra Credit Union is collecting and matching donations in honor of Juneteenth.

Celebrating Juneteenth
June 19th, 1865, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were finally informed that they had been legally freed. This holiday was first celebrated in Texas as “Jubilee Day” on June 19th, 1866; later being known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Juneteenth (a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth”). Juneteenth marks a date of major significance in American history and is celebrated as the day when all Americans were liberated. Juneteenth has been observed in Black communities since the late 1800s, and is often referred to as “America’s Second Independence Day”. As its recognition grew over the years, Juneteenth became an official federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

This year, Monterra Credit Union wants to highlight the importance of learning and preserving American history – such as the story behind Juneteenth – by hosting a donation match through the Monterra Community Fund! We will be donating to the Black History Foundation, an organization that fights to empower and celebrate America’s history, believing that protecting our past is the key to shaping a stronger, more unified future!
